Chapter 10: Be the best sky pilot you can.
My grandpa was a pilot. He owned his own plane and would take us for flights whenever he could. I loved going up in the tiny Cessna with him. Once he let me “fly” the plane from the co-pilot seat, and I was so proud of myself! I found a picture later that he had taken and written on the back, “littlest granddaughter thinks she’s the pilot for the day.” The best part about flying with Pa was that I personally knew the pilot and knew how very much he loved us. I understood that his ultimate goal was to protect us before, during, and after the flight. Flying on commercial planes, I don’t know the pilot. I never even see them, but I know they are there for the same purpose, to protect us on the flight. While I trust both the commercial pilot and the personal plane pilot to get us to our destination, it’s easier to put our trust in someone we know and talk with over someone we don’t.
Jesus was put on this earth to forgive us from our sins. His goal was to teach people the way to Heaven through the power of the cross. In His days, people saw him teaching, witnessed his crucifixion and burial, and some even were fortunate enough to see Him after his resurrection, and yet many still did not believe that He was the Messiah come to save. Now in life, we cannot see Jesus in physical form, but we know and trust in His existence. We have the Bible to tell us His very words and the stories throughout history that tell the truth of His time on earth. Because we cannot see Him in human form now, some people still refuse to believe, just as they refused to believe in His power when He was on earth. This is a downfall of man, not believing what we can’t see or refusing to believe what we can see because it’s too amazing. To trust Jesus as our Sky Pilot, we must have a personal relationship with Him. The disciples who walked and taught with Him believed because they were working and teaching with Him. To truly believe He is the one sent to save and protect us, we must have a personal connection and conversation with our pilot on a daily basis.
How can we be the best sky pilot we can be? How are we to spread the gospel if we don’t like to preach or be the person speaking? One way to be a true teacher of the word is to pray for others. Prayer is seemingly very simple. It’s our way of communicating with God on a personal basis. It’s a private event that doesn’t have to take place in front of other people or even with other people, although the power of prayer as a body is amazing. It opens eyes and doors for people and allows them to see the word of Christ in action. Being the best sky pilot possible means praying and loving the people on this earth, whom He came to save.
Ephesians 1:17-23: “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.”
With the power of God and His plan for sending His Son to die for our sins and be raised from the dead, how could we not have the power ourselves to not proclaim His truths and pray for the power of His Spirit to be known throughout the world? What an exciting challenge He has left for us!
